Mrs. Shirey

Hello My Name Is...

Mrs. Shirey

There are many parts to our reading class: whole group instruction, small group  instruction, independent and collaborative reading practice, and computer work. If your student is assigned Reading Plus, time is given to complete the work in class so that I can monitor and make sure, when needed, your student is using the appropriate reading strategy to help him or her work through a challenging piece of text or vocabulary exercise. Reading Plus is due at the end of class on Friday (unless a student was absent).  Some students may use Achieve 3000 or System 44 as it may better address their reading needs.  During the second quarter, students may work on the vocabulary section of Reading Plus if needed at home to catch up. Students should also be studying their vocabulary at home this quarter from their guided reading piece.  The first vocabulary list went home Oct. 28.
Extra credit for quarter two is due on Dec. 13.  For extra credit the students may read from a Reading Counts book approved by me. The students need to keep chapter summaries and pass a Reading Counts test (70% min. is passing) for credit.
The second quarter reading exam is Dec. 13. The exam is an application style, meaning the students will apply the skills learned in class. The students will read passages to identify the main idea, cite textual evidence supporting the main idea, use textual evidence to make inference or draw conclusion about text, use textual evidence to identity and understand the text structure, and use context and language clues to identify the meaning of unknown words.
